What is a Scale and Polish: -
A scale and polish is essentially a professional dental clean, where we use ultrasonic scaler devices that spray water during operation to remove stains and calculus away from teeth. This is to improve/maintain gum health as well as to improve overall smile aesthetics. We will always recommend a scale and polish before teeth whitening as this alone can give great results to brightening a smile.
Calculus is something that is very difficult to remove at home and need this type of treatment to break away the hard stone like substance, to then allow toothpaste to reach these covered areas. The advantages of a scale and polish include improved smile aesthetics from stain removal, improved gingival health and prevention of periodontal disease. The disadvantages of a scale and polish can be sensitivity and discomfort during the procedure.
Sometimes local anesthetic maybe needed for the very sensitive areas, especially for individuals who have gum recession/thin enamel. We also use hand scalers when needed to help clean root surfaces under the gum level and this can help improve comfort for people who have hightened tooth sensitivity. Alternatively air polishing can be used to remove stains, which is far more comfortable, however this alone cannot replace a scaler as it cannot remove calculus. If you have a large build up of plaque and inflamed gums, we recommend improved oral hygiene techniques to be used prior to having a scale and polish. The reason is that the outcome is far better compared to having a scale that could push plaque further down the gums, making the problem worse.
Finally after the scale, we carry out a polish using the device seen in the photo below. This helps remove any remaining stains and gives that nice clean feel and gives the teeth a nice shine.
Why choose Smile Serenity Dental Care?
We do our best to ensure patients are satisfied with their results by being thorough and carrying out the procedure as comfortably as possible for the patient. We inform the patient that certain areas can be more sensitive such as front teeth compared to back teeth. We encourage patients to let us know if they feel discomfort that is difficult to tolerate, so that we can try a different technique or use local anesthetic if necessary. We have plenty of onsite parking, have easy online booking and open on Tuesday evenings as well as Saturday mornings for patient convenience.

There are two dental cleans within the Smile Serenity Essentials Dental Plan and four dental cleans within the Smile Serenity Perio-support Plan. These dental plans are designed to reduce the cost of routine dental appointments, ultimately making your dental health a priority as well as accessible.
A direct access scale and polish has been designed for patients that have not been seen for a dental examination with us and would only like a dental clean. We always recommend a dental examination for your dental health. Just keep in mind that we can't take responsibility for any undiagnosed dental problems that might show up during or after your direct access treatment, so we do encourage a regular exam when you can.
The cost of a routine scale and polish, after a new patient dental examination has been completed, is £60. If you are just wanting a dental clean without an examination, then the scale and polish direct access is £85.
