Crowns in Leicester

If a tooth has fractured or has lost more than 50% of its tooth structure, then a lab based restoration would be recommended to save the tooth. A crown is a lab based restoration, a cap that covers the whole of a weakened tooth, like a helmet. When a tooth is cracked, heavily filled or has had root canal treatment, the remaining tooth can split under normal biting pressure. A crown holds it together and spreads the load, and it's often what stands between keeping a tooth and losing it. .

When do you need a crown?

  1. A cracked tooth. A crown stops the crack spreading. Our page on cracked teeth explains the warning signs.

  2. After root canal treatment, especially on back teeth, which become more brittle. See root canal treatment.

  3. A tooth with a very large filling, where there's more filling than tooth left.

  4. Badly worn teeth, to restore their height and protect what remains.

  5. On top of a dental implant, or as part of a dental bridge.

Sometimes a smaller lab-made restoration, called an onlay, protects the tooth while keeping more of your natural tooth. We'll tell you if that's an option.

Which crown material

E.max (lithium disilicate) is a ceramic that combines natural translucency with good strength. It's usually our choice for front and premolar teeth.

Zirconia is the strongest ceramic we use. It's ideal for back teeth that take the heaviest biting forces, and for people who grind.

We'll recommend a material based on where the tooth is and how you bite, and explain why.

What happens, step by step

  1. Examination and X-rays to check the tooth and its nerve are healthy enough for a crown.

  2. Preparation. Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is shaped and a scan or impression is taken. A temporary crown protects it in the meantime.

  3. Fitting. About 2 weeks later, the permanent crown is cemented and your bite is checked.

We don't make same-day crowns. Lab-made crowns let a technician build up the shape and shade in layers, which we find gives a better result.

Crown came off?

Keep it safe, avoid chewing on that side, and call us. If the crown and tooth are both intact, it can often be re-cemented for £125. See what to do if your crown falls off, or book an emergency appointment.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a dental crown in Leicester? Crowns start from £730, with an exact written quote after your examination.

How long do crowns last? Typically 10–15 years or more. It depends on how well the tooth underneath is looked after, because the edge where the crown meets the tooth can still decay.

Does getting a crown hurt? The tooth is numbed for preparation. It's normal for it to feel slightly tender for a few days afterwards.

Do I need a crown after root canal treatment? Usually, yes, on back teeth. Root-treated teeth are more likely to fracture, and a crown protects them. Front teeth sometimes only need a filling.

Crown or veneer? A crown covers the whole tooth and is for strength. A veneer covers the front only and is mainly for appearance. If you're thinking about cosmetic changes, see our veneers page.
